Our Parish School of Religion provides religious instruction for children from pre-k through 9th grade. Children are taught traditional prayers, are introduced to the Scriptures, the Bible, the commandments, the life and ministry of Jesus, the traditions and teachings of the Church and a love for God, neighbor (others) and themselves as children of God created good in God’s image and likeness. They are also prepared to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation (First Penance) and Holy Communion in the second grade. Ninth graders are prepared to receive the sacrament of Confirmation.
Classes are held on Sunday’s from 9 AM until 10:20 so that families attending the 8 AM Sunday Mass may then bring the children to the hall, or come to class first and then attend the 10:30 Sunday Mass.
It is imperative that families attend Sunday Mass! The children are taught that attendance at Sunday Mass is a serious obligation and they want to come. But they cannot come if their parents do not take their own obligation seriously.
Our Catechists, teachers, are well-trained and dedicated volunteers, and every teacher has an aide in the classroom as well. However, the religious education of your children must be reinforced in the home, by the family. Parents should pray with their children and take an interest in what they are learning.
Religious Education is not a substitute for the parents responsibility. In the Rite of Baptism for children this prayer is prayed over the parents: God is the giver of all life, human and divine. May he bless the parents of this child. They will be the first teachers of their child in the ways of faith. May they be also the best of teachers, bearing witness to the faith by what they say and do.
We welcome your family to join the religious education program here at St. Charles Borromeo. You may contact Christina Wynn, our Religious Education Coordinator, at [email protected].
May God Bless you and your families as you make your journey of faith together.
